Art. 1.0 Preamble.
The Contest - Premio NSS 2006 - (NSS 2006 Award) is open for assigning awards to the best technical papers regarding IT security in all the Italian territory.
The Contest is under the patronage of the Pisa Municipality and other Governmental and Local Institutions, the list of which will be published with appropriate subsequent integration.
Art.2.0 General prerequisites for admission.
To be admitted to the contest, technical papers need to be original and submitted in Italian, owned by Italian, physical or judicial persons, and/or written or handled by physical persons of Italian nationality or origin or Italian, judicial persons.
Art. 3.0 Participation in the contest.
Registration is free of charge, prior registration in the non-profit @System association - the latter also free of charge, and revocable at any moment subsequent to the Convention.
Any person satisfying the general prerequisites can submit one or more technical papers to the contest.
Art. 3.1 Categories
The contest categories are:
- Best Student
- Best Research Center-University
- Best Company/Firm
- Absolute Best
Art. 4.0 contest Procedure.
Awards are assigned to technical papers which will pass all selection phases:
- Registration Acceptance
- Submission Phase
- Excellent papers selection
- Nomination for finals Phase
- Selection of Category Winners and Special Prize Winners
Art. 4.1 Registration Acceptance.
By registering one proposes the nomination of a paper in the Contest.
Anyone can propose a submission of a paper in the Premio NSS 2006.
Contest registration prerequisites:
- provision of a valid email address
Acceptance or rejection of a registration is and remains at full discretion of the Award Direction.
Art. 4.2 Nomination
The nomination of a technical paper can be made in one way only:
- nomination through registration on the official Convention portal
Prerequisites for nominations:
- general admission prerequisites (Art.2.0)
- acceptance of the regulations
- consensus of personal data treatment
- perfect readability of the technical paper
- compatibility with the category to which the paper belongs
- abidance by the Italian and European laws
The management reserves the right to add further categories, in addition to the one indicated, if the paper deserves to compete in those.
In any case, a paper can compete in at most 3 categories.
Art. 4.3 Selection of Excellent Papers
The nominated papers will go through the assessment of an apposite Selection Panel that has the duty of selecting the "excellent" papers.
Criteria adopted for the selection regard the following:
- communicative nature (structure, design and contents)
- technical nature (technical functionalities, technological choices, accessibility).
Evaluation areas vary according to the Category the paper belongs to, and in general are:
- usability and accessibility of the research object
- technical solutions adopted
- planning idea or business idea
- clarity of exposure
- harmony of the project in its entirety
In each category, more criteria will be considered as excellency elements if adopted, specified in the following:
- Best Student: demonstration to have gone beyond the canonical university program, and to have been able to seize and adapt, with particular style, the courses studied.
- Best Research Center/University: careful attention to the most recent problems; prediction of future problems; non-profit nature of the information; didactic aspects of the problems treated.
- Best Company/Firm: provision of an innovative and low cost technology; presence of information clarity and customer safeguard policy.
- Absolute Best: realization of an original paper, and not having reference to any other existing papers.
Art. 4.4 Selection of the Finalists
The Excellent papers compete, prior further selection, for the final phase, anticipated by the announcement of the nominations in each category and the Special Prize categories.
The Panel of selection is composed of the Convention's Scientific Committee and the Association's President.
Members of the Panel express their preferences regarding the papers considered to be the best in each category.
Votes are expressed in the contest system on line, and every panel member conveys the list of papers deemed to be the best. That communication is done after giving an objective judgment that keeps in mind the following criteria:
- use of innovative instruments or techniques
- compatibility with the objectives of the paper (mission)
The prize Management, after viewing the votes expressed by panel members, makes the nominations.
The Panel's judgment is unchallengeable and incontrovertible.
Panel members can signal papers worthy of special mentions (panel critical prize)
Art. 4.5 Winning papers and Prize Assignment
For prize assignment, an apposite final panel will be created, composed of experts coming from various knowledge fields, who will choose the winners amongst the finalists of each category.
Such a selection can also be made using "subjective criteria" and on the basis of individual experience and knowledge of each panel member.
The Final Panel will convene to assign the prizes on the day of the Convention, October 17th, 2006, during which the prize-giving ceremony will take place.
Art. 5.0 The prizes
For each category, only the first classified will be awarded.
The prizes will be given during a public ceremony, inserted during the 4th Net&System Security 2006 Convention (NSS2006).
The prizes can be assigned exclusively to the owner of the paper or their delegates present at the ceremony or, in absence of both and with justified reason, in a subsequent manifestation.
The prize management and selection panel can decide to assign Special Prizes.
Art. 5.1 Prize Type
The Premio NSS is not merely a simbolic award.
The exact type of awards are published on the official Convention and Premio website.
In case an award regarding a certain category is not assigned, the prize will go to the @System Association which will decide its use.
Art. 6.0 Copyright.
The copyright of each paper registered in the contest remains the sole property of the legitimate owner, who has the full responsibility of protecting it, by appending the copyright or by depositing the paper at the qualified organization.
The preselection Team, as receiver of the contest registration module, is authorized to use the paper for contest puroposes and for subsequent spreading, exposure, duplication for the construction of a database of rewarded or mention-worthy sites, quotation in its own website, having the author (or authors and/or holder of the rights for exclusive economic use) renounced any compensation of demand for such an action. The paper can also appear in the convention proceedings, which will become a scientific publication to all intents and purposes.
Art. 7.0 Cancellation of a contest paper
The cancellation of a paper registration is possible by simply sending an email to the prize management (
cfp@atsystem.org).
Such a communication must be done by the owner of the paper indicated at the moment of registration and/or through the indicated email address.
The email must contain in the "subject" field: "Removal of paper-paper name".
Art. 8.0 Appeal and signalling
Every judgment is unchallengeable.
No signalling will be accepted in absence of one of the following reasons: paper of own property and realized by organizations not formerly indicated, paper containing material or infomation against the law.
Appeal against any registration or nomination not accepted for non conformity or technical anomalies can be presented to the prize Management within 15 days from the contest conclusion date, which coincides with the award ceremony date.
